PEORIA —Tavis Smiley is out as speaker for the annual Martin Luther King luncheon Jan. 16 at Peoria Civic Center. Michael Eric Dyson is in, tentatively.
Public Employees for Community Concerns, the city of Peoria employee group that sponsors the luncheon, canceled the contract with Smiley on Wednesday amid growing concerns about a backlash to his appearance.
Following a local book club’s public pronouncement of its decision to boycott Smiley because of his criticisms of President Barack Obama, the local NAACP and a private family group also asked for refunds on tickets purchased for tables of 10.
Oh dear.

Willard Mitt Romney really dislikes when people call him out on things. This is one of many times that Romney has allowed himself to seem visibly flustered when pressed about words that he’s saying that doesn’t seem to match the reality of…well…reality. Watch Willard get really upset after the jump and then try to bully a reporter who calls him out on his statements that seem blatantly false.
Oh and by the way? If Obama did this how quickly would the “Angry Black Man” label be put on him? I think we know.

At the first battle for the 2012 bid for the GOP candidate for president Rick Santorum placed second in the Iowa caucuses by only 8 votes. Santorum who is a known homophobe and has questionable thoughts on Black people almost beat Mitt Romney who spent millions of dollars on Iowa while Santorum barely had a million. As he explained why the GOP has to take down Obama (“Obamacare”, The Administration crushing small business…cause the crappy economy set up by the GOP? Has nothing to do with it) he pushed his “I’m like you” argument which is being praised all through out media but in all honesty scared me. This bigoted homophobe is being accepted as reasonable.
Be afraid.
Santorum almost winning Iowa proves that to run for president all you need is virtually no money and a dream…oh, and hate in your heart.

So as I’ve traveled the interwebs looking for magic and awesome I ran into a few sites talking about a supposedly amazing short film called “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons.” It stars an all Black cast and the plot is something I don’t think I’ve ever heard of in another movie. Ever. It’s about a son molesting his father. I sit here after watching this and I don’t have words. I’ll put a #TriggerWarning here because I don’t want to surprise anyone who has been the victim of sexual abuse…but…holy crap. I’m speechless. I’m never speechless. I write speeches on being speechless and at the moment?
I got nothing.

Gray says Michael was agitated when the officer entered the room, and the whole meeting ended with Michael arrested and cuffed, with zip ties on his hands and his feet.
“I was led to believe that Michael saw a police officer and attacked a police officer on sight,” said Gray, adding that that’s not what happened. She knows because she ultimately obtained a copy of the police report.
In it, the officer, Lt. Frank Gordo, says he placed his hand on Michael’s and, “the boy pushed my hand away in a batting motion, pushed papers off the table, and kicked me in the right knee.” When Michael wouldn’t calm down, Gordo cuffed Michael’s hands and feet with zip ties and took the boy to the Stockton Kaiser Psychiatric Hospital in the back of a squad car.
So apparently–a grown police officer got kicked in the knee by a 5 year old and decided it was time to handcuff the kid. I mean, what other choice would he have really? This kid is a MENACE. Being all 5 years old and weighing like a hot 40-50 pounds. This kid needed to be taken down. Good thing the police was there to help out. Don’t they make cages for 5 year olds? He should have totally put this kid in a cage. You know. Just for safety purposes.

Recently I was invited to be a part of a delegation of labor leaders heading down to Alabama to speak out against one of the worst immigration laws in the country. I found it interesting, because the trip was billed as a “black” labor leader delegation. I’ve heard a lot about the black-brown discussion over immigrant rights, so I was ecstatic that this delegation of specifically black folks was going down to witness this law’s impact first hand. As a commentator on race and blackness, I felt it important that I join. Although there are those within the community who aren’t supportive, there are many who are absolutely against the prejudice that we’ve seen popping up across the country this past year, under the guise of “saving American jobs.”

Chris Heath: What can you tell about a man by the type of pizza that he likes?
Herman Cain: [repeats the question aloud, then pauses for a long moment] The more toppings a man has on his pizza, I believe the more manly he is.
Chris Heath: Why is that?
Herman Cain: Because the more manly man is not afraid of abundance. [laughs]
Devin Gordon: Is that purely a meat question?
Herman Cain: A manly man don’t want it piled high with vegetables! He would call that a sissy pizza.

I almost forgot Michelle Bachmann was running for President since she hadn’t actively stroked out during a debate or (allegedly) felt up any women. But lo and behold she didn’t want to be forgotten. YOU WILL REMEMBER THAT SHE’S RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT AND THAT SHE WANTS US TO BE LESS SOCIALIST JUST LIKE THE PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF CHINA!
