The Strange Thing About the Johnsons

» 30 November 2011 »

So as I’ve traveled the interwebs looking for magic and awesome I ran into a few sites talking about a supposedly amazing short film called The Strange Thing About the Johnsons.” It stars an all Black cast and the plot is something I don’t think I’ve ever heard of in another movie. Ever. It’s about a son molesting his father.  I sit here after watching this and I don’t have words. I’ll put a #TriggerWarning here because I don’t want to surprise anyone who has been the victim of sexual abuse…but…holy crap. I’m speechless. I’m never speechless. I write speeches on being speechless and at the moment?

I got nothing.

Watch. If you dare. And if you dare for the love of Zeus please leave a comment and tell me what you think…

I couldn’t make it past the wedding picture, but… wow.  I can’t.  Wow.  Who’s responsible for this?

I watched the whole thing.  It is provocative and the most daring plot I’ve ever witnessed. But as I watched it, I wondered about how this fits within the Oedipus/Elecktra complex.  There are cases of children become sexually attractive to, flirting, etc with a (opposite sex parent).  So the son’s infatuation with the father was surprising, but I had a flimsy construct for it.  And I have heard of sons raping mothers (sick, yes).  But, I admit, I’ve never heard of such a relationship as this.  I kept wondering when and how did the son gain so much ‘power’?  That’s often how molesting relationships start and maintain.  What real life circumstances would create a situation where a 1) child, 2) subordinate, and 3) presumably weaker physically and politically individual could repeated take advantage of his parent?  Because such scenarios are foreign to most people (I assume), it leaves us unprepared to help victims (like the father in this short).

Oh, and it really pretty brave of you to share this. I’m not sure if I can.

I agree. The short is daring. I believe the set up and power dynamic completely destroys us in a way that makes the movie gripping. I just watched it with a group of people and the one thing we all agreed on was that it was well done. We had varied responses on the emotional side but i feel like almost every aspect of it plays with the mind. I also think this has an interesting role in how we look at black actors/actresses and plots with them as the main cast. That to me was the most interesting aspect of this…

The group i just watched it with all agreed that we’ve never even contemplated something like this movie. Which i’d argue could be a good thing…

Welp, it’s certainly given me a lot to simultaneously ponder and unsee. I was steeply impressed with the narrative, direction, and acting, but then they completely lost me with the hella corny ending.

But prior to the dark comedy / satirical conclusion, flipping the script on the father / son abuse dynamic really shone a light on how shame functions as a paralyzing, rationalizing force in sexual abuse, where the victim blames himself, what he may have done to cause it, encourage it, not having stopped it off sooner, etc.

We’ll never know how the incestuous relationship actually launched and we’re just left with so many questions — Did the son, after the masturbating incident, essentially make a move on his dad and his dad didn’t want him to feel bad about that, either, so he let it go on?  Did he think his son was twisted but out of parental concern [and shame over his son's predilection] he offered himself as a sacrificial lamb? Was the dad abused as a child?

Even coming up with the possible scenarios makes my eyes bleed.

Not only are the details murky to us, the viewers, but to the father, who has been subjected to it for years. The son projects onto him, claims that he “wanted it, too,” that he was a willing participant. Abusers drill that kind of thing into you, making you confused about how it started, that it continues, etc. The father expresses guilt over “his role” a couple of times.

All of this is to say: this shit cray.

I was excited to see this when seeing the trailer and hearing the premise but after watching it, it was super disappointing. I will give the people behind it kudos for going with that spin on the molestation story but the acting was awful and the story wasn’t believable in any way. I wonder if they used this as a springboard for a longer feature, they might be able to piece the story together to explain how the molestation started. Who’s going to get raped by their high school son? C’mon man, the father wasn’t even abused during the short, I could understand if the son was physically imposing his will on the father but they didn’t even use that as a foil for the rape.

Again they had a good idea but failed miserably on the execution. I would have loved to see L joy’s face though after the first initial scene. I’m sure that was classic.

This was totally freaky, creepy, bizarre. Never seen anything like this in my life. The son sounds like a muppet. His wife was wearing white sandals with black tights on NYE. He’s a psychopath. The McMansion gave me chills.

All jokes aside: SEX SECRETS MAKE YOU SICK.

Thank you for letting me know about this, DNLee!

This movie was dark, the writer nailed the way it felt to be violated by a family member.Eirie that it was father and son thus, on point from a victims point of view In a lot of cases the  mother knew and turned a blind eye to the horror to keep from confronting the son ,the husband was trying to reach out by leaving his manuscript under the pillow .What wasn’t clear to me is did she give it to the son or did he just find it?. As you all were saying the ethnicity never entered my mind wacthing it because the writer never allow the viewer a chance to take it there because you are literally hanging on the emotions of the characters. The only thing that was missing was how and when and who intiated this (sick) relationship. I do think had the mother re-acted to what she saw through the fence she could have maybe put a sooner than later end to it.She coward away from her duties as a wife and as a mother.

Wow. I’m literally speechless. I’m not sure how to take that. I think it was well done.
